The B-52s’ Fred Schneider urges lobster boycott

Last Tuesday, animal rights group People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) announced that vocalist Fred Schneider of American party band The B-52s has taped a radio public service announcement in Boston urging a boycott of the annual Maine Lobster Festival. The festival runs for five days starting Wednesday in Rockland, Maine.
Schnider, author of the 1979 hit Rock Lobster, says “I’ve always sung the praises of lobsters, and it really burns my butt when people drop ’em in a pot of boiling water. So take off those bibs and skip the Lobster Festival. Just go to the beach. The sand is crawling with bright red, slow-moving creatures to enjoy—they’re called sunburned tourists!”
In 1999 the festival set a world record by cooking eight tons of lobster at once in a giant pot.
The B-52s are on a US tour with The Go-Gos and The Psychedelic Furs, playing tonight at The Shoreline Amphitheatre south of San Francisco. | PETA | | MP3 file of Schneider's PSA | | The B-52s | | tour dates | | bio | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
