Update: Ordered to shut down, Napster gets reprieve 27 July 2000 Wednesday afternoon a US federal judge ordered San Mateo, California software maker Napster, Inc. to shut down its servers by midnight Friday night Pacific time (8 am BST on Saturday). The action follows a copyright infringement lawsuit brought against Napster by the Recording Industry Association of America. Cary Sherman, one of the RIAAs lawyers, said The decision will pave the way for the future of online music. Being centralized and server based, Napsters system provided an easy target for legal action. Distributed file sharing systems such as Gnutella, which do not rely on centralized hardware or administration, may prove to be immune from such action. As of mid day Thursday (27 July), worldwide demand for Gnutella software downloads had forced several servers to shut down while administrators added hardware to support the fresh demand. On Friday afternoon (28 July), nine hours before the shutdown deadline, a US federal appeals court granted Napster the right to remain online until a full hearing takes place, which will likely happen this fall. | BBC story | | Cnet stories | | Napster | | Gnutella | | top of page | |
