The The release NakedSelf as free MP3 downloads
22 July 2000

Matt Johnson, the English composer and multi-instrumentalist behind existentialist rock collective The The, released a piercing essay this week which, like Courtney Love’s May talk at Digital Hollywood, examines the MP3 brouhaha in terms of artist control versus corporate greed. Among other things he announces that he’s posting his entire album NakedSelf on the Web for free download in MP3 (MPEG I layer 3) format.
Johnson says “Although the range and diversity of music being created and performed has never been wider, the traditional outlets for music have never been more restrictive... increasing numbers of artists are now becoming victims of censorship by apathy and neglect...
“Through their short sighted arrogance and greed, the major label media conglomerates are sowing the seeds for their own destruction. Artists are now poised to come off the nipple of the major labels and finally stand on their own two feet....”
Johnson’s music is now on the Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) owned Nothing Records, which is owned in turn by a series of larger corporations ending with French bottled water and entertainment conglomerate Vivendi (hence the clever Russian dolls image).
While lawyers are earning their customary outrageous sums determining copyright law for the Internet, the question may be largely moot given the nature of the technology (e.g. Napster, Gnutella, and the Internet infrastructure itself). Johnson, like Love, provides thoughtful and helpful insight into a deeper question: how can artists catch and ride the ineluctable technology wave for their own benefit? | Matt Johnon's full essay | | The The | | Courtney Love's speech | | discography | | sample from NakedSelf | | CD | | top of page |
