Memorial service for Roskilde victims
2 July 2000
More than 1,000 persons attended a memorial service today for eight fans killed Friday night at a Pearl Jam performance at Denmark’s annual Roskilde charity festival. The cause of death for the victims, all male, is not yet known. Police speculate it was suffocation resulting from crushed lungs as the surrounding crowd trampeled over individuals who had fallen or slipped on the muddy ground near the stage.
The Cure cancelled their show which was to follow Pearl Jam. Oasis and The Pet Shop Boys have since cancelled their performances out of respect for the dead, but otherwise the festival continues on schedule on its last day. Money slated to pay the cancelled bands will now go to the victims’ familes, according to festival organizers. | BBC story | | Roskilde Festival | | Roskilde press release on tragedy | | top of page |
