Roskilde makes formal statement on concert tragedy 18 July 2000 The managers of Denmark’s annual Roskilde charity festival have issued a formal and lengthy statement on the Pearl Jam concert tragedy in which nine young men died near the stage in the midst of a crushing crowd last month. The statement describes what is now known about the deaths, and provides details regarding the events following the tragedy including the festival management’s decision to continue rather than cancel the performances. Pearl Jam cancelled shows on their European tour and issued a statement the same weekend. (See the Rockbites news archive for the story.) On a recent Web chat the band said that they will not play any festivals for at least a year, but their upcoming North American tour with Supergrass will go on as planned.
