VH-1’s questionably conceived top 100 rock songs poll
7 January 2000
The US division of television network VH-1, having commissioned a poll of 700 music industry insiders, has announced their list of the 100 greatest rock songs. The top five were (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones, Respect by Aretha Franklin, Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan, and Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen. Among those voting were Bono (Paul Hewson), Lou Reed, and Art Garfunkel.
VH-1 programming director Todd Schwartz explained that the poll’s configuration and rules were such that a high number of great songs by an artist could result in division of votes, with none of such an artist’s songs making the cut. This, he says, explains why the top 100 hold no songs by such artists as R.E.M., Neil Young, or U2.
The only song from the past 10 years deemed worthy of the list was 1991’s Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Schwartz claims the list’s exclusion of recent music is due to the age of the voting panel’s members. | BBC story | | VH-1 top 100 list | | top of page |
