Fringes of Grammy nominations hold some interest
5 January 2000
Predictably following US sales figures, the 42nd annual Grammy nominations from America’s National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences hold no surprises and little recognition of innovation. Nominees for Rock Album of the year are Breakdown by Melissa Etheridge, Significant Other by Limp Bizkit, Echo by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Supernatural by Santana.
Fusion rocker Carlos Santana is the frontrunner with ten nominations, echoing his striking comeback with last year’s collaboration album Supernatural following years of silence. Best known for his work from the late ’60s, Santana received one Grammy in 1988.
The Rap Album nominations are a bit more interesting with contenders Busta Rhymes, Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott, Eminem, Nas, and The Roots.
Other bright spots include Tom Waits’ song Hold On from his LP Mule Variations, nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance; Fatboy Slim’s Praise You, nominated for Best Dance Recording; Starfuckers, Inc. by Nine Inch Nails and Iron Man by Black Sabbath for Best Metal Performance; Moby’s Bodyrock for Best Rock Instrumental Performance; Björk’s All Is Full Of Love for Best Short Form Music Video; Radiohead’s Meeting People Is Easy for Best Long Form Music Video; and Afro Celt Sound System’s Volume 2: Release, nominated for Best World Music Album.
Nine Inch Nails’ The Fragile received a nomination for Best Alternative Music Performance, and Tom Waits’ Mule Variations is in contention for Best Contemporary Folk Album. OK... that’s surprising.
The 2000 Grammy awards take place 23 February at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, and will be Webcast live. | BBC story | | Nominee list | | top of page |
