John Lydon promotes honesty on Rotten Television 24 January 2000 With a leering John Lydon provocatively uttering This is the opening. Odd, innit?, US cable channel VH-1 aired the first of seven installments of new show Rotten Television last night. In a whirlwind half hour, the ex Sex Pistol/Public Image Limited vocalist said Rock and roll began with honesty, and proceeded to expose the absence of it. He blew up (with a tank, no less) a sex doll wearing an original Sex Pistols T-shirt, holding a 1969 Shea Stadium Beatles ticket, and with a fragment of Sid Vicious actual suicide note stuffed in its mouthWhat matters is what people did, not what they were wearing when they did it. His video crew revealed the stodgy and seemingly fascistic production staff at the Roseanne ShowLydon was scheduled to appear but got thrown out at the last minute. And he directly insulted Ozzy Osbourne, Courtney Love (a cheap fake), Axel Rose (a fraud!), and Neil Young, who he mocked wearing a wig and a Young trademark felt hat. Twenty years ago Young invoked Lydons Johnny Rotten persona in his song Hey Hey, My My, but his publicists apparently told Rotten Television that Young wouldnt interview with anyone he doesnt know. Lydon concluded Rock & Roll will never die, but you fucks will! Episode 1 airs again on Tuesday 25 January at 6 pm (ET and PT). VH-1 has not posted times for future episodes. | Rotten TV site | | discography | | sample | | top of page | |
