MP3.com in hot water for alleged copyright infringement 24 January 2000 On Friday the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed a federal lawsuit to force music distribution site MP3.com to discontinue services added just two weeks ago. Their Beam-It and Instant Listening services allow users to listen to CDs in MP3.coms online archive. To gain online access to an album, a user buys that album from an MP3.com partner. If they already own a CD they place it in their CD-ROM driveMP3.coms software reads the discs catalog ID and registers the title for the user. The day after MP3.com announced the service, anonymous sources from major online music retailers told CNET that they declined MP3.coms invitation to partner for fear of copyright infrigement lawsuits. RIAA president Hillary Rosen wrote It is not legal to compile a vast database of our members [sic] sound recordings with no permission and no license. MP3.com CEO Michael Robertson responded ...you apparently believe that you have the right to control the content even after the user buys it. We disagree. | Live Daily story | | CNET story | | top of page | |
