Labour Party may throw out Oasis patron Alan McGee
20 January 2000
Alan McGee, Labour Party member—and founder and former chief of Creation Records—announced in mid December to the chagrin of his party that he will fund the London mayoral campaign of independent candidate Malcom McLaren. McLaren, Sex Pistols impresario, has built a political platform that includes legalization for brothels and marijuana, as well as social and infrastructure reforms.
Now the Labour Party is likely to throw McGee out: party rules specify routine exclusion for members backing independent candidates.
McGee told the Sun newspaper on Thursday “The party should be able to contain everyone’s opinions... Nobody should be demonised or kicked out for standing up for what they believe.” A party spokesperson said “We hope to be able to speak to him soon to clarify the situation.”
McGee, who has donated more than £100,000 (US$160,000) to Labour, has been a guest more than once at Downing Street, as has notable protégé Oasis front man Noel Gallagher. | BBC story | | Reuters story | | top of page |
