Daniel Johnston stages multi front comeback
20 January 2000
Austin based singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston, who counts among his fans The Butthole Surfers, Yo La Tengo, Pearl Jam, and Sonic Youth, has been staging a bit of a comeback. In August he released a limited edition of Rejected Unknown, his first album since his 1993 major label debut Fun. That LP has now been picked up by New York indie imprint Which? Records, who re-release it this July.
He also appears on the Which? Records compilation Songs In The Key Of Z: The Curious Universe Of Outsider Music, due May. And last year he opened art exhibits in Austin, Dallas, New York, Los Angeles, The Netherlands, and Germany.
Meanwhile, Softskull Press has contracted author Tarssa English to write a biography on Johnston. Hi How Are You: The Definitive Daniel Johnston Handbook, complete with more than 250 photographs and drawings, is due this year. | CDnow allstar story | | Austin Chronicle story | | bio | | discography | | sample from Fun | | top of page |
