Major victory for Low Power FM radio in the US 20 January 2000 On Thursday, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to allow a new class of low power FM radio stations from 10 to 100 Watts. The previous lower limit, with few exceptions, was 6,000 Watts. The move clears the way for about a thousand new low power stations across the United States. Chairman William Kennard stated that FCC tests have proven that LPFM does not in fact interefere with reception of high powered stationswhich has been the long standing argument against LPFM promoted by the National Association of Broadcasters. Low Power FM holds some potential to counteract the trend toward consolidation. A pending merger, for example, would create a single entity controlling more than 800 stations. The total number of radio station owners has dropped by about 1,000 in the past four years, according to the Washington Post. Licensing fees for LPFM stations will be about US$500 (£310), while the transmitter hardware will cost as little as $150. | Live Daily story | | Low Power Radio Coalition site | | top of page | |
