The ethics of selling out when you’re a musician
19 January 2000
NME reports that artists are divided regarding the ethics of selling songs for advertisements. Among those who’ve taken the cash are Blur, Fatboy Slim, The Feelies, Gomez, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Lightning Seeds, Shed Seven, and Spiritualized.
Others have just said no—often with lawyers in tow when their music is stolen by corporations: Alec Empire, Tom Waits, and Neil Young.
Some struggle and then give in. Frank Black, Pixies founder and front man, talked to NME about his decision to allow Smirnoff to use the Pixies track Tame from 1989’s Doolittle. “I do have mixed feelings about it but they paid me a lot of money and I really like vodka.” | NME story | | top of page |
