Manic Street Preachers dethrone Westlife in UK
17 January 2000
Irish boy band Westlife, to the chagrin of some, captured the first number one single spot for 2000 in the UK. They’ve held on until now. Uncompromising Welsh agitrockers Manic Street Preachers have climbed past them with their limited edition single Masses Against The Classes.
On New Year’s Eve, bassist Nicky Wire had exhorted the 60,000 in attendance to buy the Manics’ next single expressly to dethrone Westlife. But with the statement made, the single will now drop out of site—having been deleted the same day it was released. | BBC story | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
