Alec Empire vs. the Sony Entertainment-ocracy
10 January 2000
Deutsche technocore voyager Alec Empire claims on his label’s Web site that entertainment giant Sony corporation has illegally used a song of his.
“...I can only say FUCK SONY! Because we found out two weeks ago that SONY in Taiwan has used the Atari Teenage Riot track No Remorse for a camcorder advert. We never ever give tracks to corporations to advertise their products...
“...the money didn’t matter for us in the first place so no payment can repair the damage—[when they hear a commercial with our songs] people out there don’t know if musicians like [Underground Resistance] or us collaborated with these corporations or not.”
In an email posted in December, Cornelius Harris of Detroit techno band Underground Resistance discussed another apparent violation of artist rights by Sony. “Sony bypassed even making a request and has decided to release a 'cover' version [of Knights Of The Jaguar] titled 'Jaguar.' Unconfirmed reports even indicate that promotional information on the records imply that it is a UR release. Cover versions traditionally have been done by fans of the original track as an homage to the original. [But in] this case, it is being done as a method of undercutting the sales of the original.
“While this is an unethical and unprincipled act in and of itself, it is also a very dangerous act. In doing this, a major label, Sony, has determined that it has the right to stomp all over an independent label in its pursuit of profits.” | NME story | | Digital Hardcore site | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
