Wilco kicks off club Lounge Ax’s final week
10 January 2000
Alt country rock quartet Wilco played a surprise two and a half hour show to open the closing week at Chicago’s Lounge Ax on Sunday—after playing as the backing band for openers Minus 5, led by Seattle’s Scott McCaughey. Some fans had waited in line seven hours to attend the sold out evening.
New landlord Brian Reynolds has evicted the legendary indie club to transform the building into a sports bar and duplex apartment, which he expects to earn him more money.
Wilco played 28 songs spanning their own career as well as that of Uncle Tupelo, Wilco’s earlier incarnation. The final day for club Lounge Ax is 15 January. Chicago’s The Cocktails will reunite to perform a farewell show. | Billboard story | | Lounge Ax site | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
