Manic Street Preachers & friends set Millennium records
1 January 2000
Blackwood, Wales’ favorite sons Manic Street Preachers played the world’s largest indoor musical event on millennium eve, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, with 54,000 on hand. An estimated two billion television viewers worldwide witnessed the 22 track set, split across midnight as the projected image of Big Ben marked the start of 2000.
The Manics have played as a trio since the 1995 disappearance of guitarist and lyricist Richey James Edwards following a history of alcoholism, anorexia, and self mutilation. Bassist Nicky Wire has been the Manics’ primary songwriter since. When front man James Dean Bradfield intro’d the players man by man during the millennium concert, he included Edwards.
Despite pre-concert publicity advertising only Feeder and Shack as opening acts, psychedelic popsters Super Furry Animals played, rounding out the all-Welsh bill. | BBC story | | NME story | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
