mp3.com countersues the RIAA 9 February 2000 Online music distribution site mp3.com announced yesterday that it is countersuing the Recording Industry Association of America as well as president Hilary Rosen, claiming defamation, libel, economic interference, and unfair business practices. The suit is apparently in response to the 21 January suit brought by the RIAA against mp3.com for alleged copyright infringement after the site launched new services that involve making thousands of CDs available for listening over the Web. CEO/chairman Michael Robertson said We can no longer tolerate the bullying tactics of this not-for-profit trade association. After we get to the bottom of all of their actions toward MP3.com, we will vigorously pursue all of our legal remedies. Rosen responded This is a transparent attempt on the part of MP3.com to silence criticism of its infringing tactics. It wont work... The lawsuit against MP3.com has nothing to do with MP3 technology. It has to do with MP3.com, the company, taking music they dont own and havent licensed to offer new services to make money for themselves. And there is nothing illegal in my saying so. | Billboard story | | mp3.com press release | | RIAA letter to mp3.com | | top of page | |
