Live review: 8th annual Tibet House benefit concert 7 February 2000 Billboards Jonathan Cohen attended Saturdays Tibet House benefit concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. It was the eighth annual concert to raise money for Tibet House, which works to help preserve Tibets ethnic and cultural heritage in the midst of two generations of communist Chinese occupation and oppression. Performers included Trey Anastasio (Phish), David Byrne (ex Talking Heads), modern composer and keyboard player Phillip Glass, Tibetan multi instrumentalist Nawang Khechog, Beninese vocalist Angelique Kidjo, Canadian fiddle player Ashley MacIsaac, Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai, Brazilian singer Virginia Rodrigues, Patti Smith, and singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright. Also appearing were Melissa Mathison, Harrison Ford, Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke, the Honorable Nawang Rabgyal, Martin Scorsese, and Stephanie Winston. The Gomang monks opened and closed the ceremonies. Byrne and Smith, each icons of the 70s new wave scene in New York, debuted previously unreleased songs as well as revisiting old favorites. | Billboard story | | Tibet House New York | | top of page | |
