Welsh superstars Stereophonics poised to conquer US
29 February 2000
Cwmaman, Wales power trio Stereophonics are poised to break big in the US with the publicity rising from their Brit nominations for best British group and album, the backing of Virgin and V2 founder Sir Richard Branson, and a major North American tour with The Charlatans (UK) starting on the 26th.
The BBC has assembled an in depth history of the band, from their start in 1991 as Tragic Love Company, through a name change and a label bidding war in 1996 leading to their signing with Virgin, and massive UK success. The article goes so far as to speculate that leader Kelly Jones has what it takes to conquer the US as a Welsh Bruce Springsteen.
The Brit Awards, the UK’s equivalent of The Grammys, take place in London on 3 March and will be broadcast in the UK the following night. Stereophonics will play, backing Best British Male nominee Tom Jones on their collaborative cover Mama Told Me Not To Come, from Jones’ 1999 LP Reload. | BBC story | | Brit Awards | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
