Grammys redefine folk genre with Waits award 25 February 2000 Wednesdays 42nd annual Grammy Awards, presented by the US National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, made latino rocker Carlos Santana the second artist in history to snag eight Grammys. He tied Michael Jacksons 1983 sweep. Dedicated to commercial success more than to artistic value, the Grammys are rarely interesting or informative. Elton John, winner of this years Legend Award, told reporters backstage This is the first time Ive ever done the Grammys in 30 years of my career. Its very nice to get this award, and its very generous of the American people to give me it, because my career started in America. [But] these shows sometimes are still full of bullshit. I dont want to slag the Grammys, but it is kind of bullshit... In any case, some notable awards this year include Male Rock Vocal Performance won by Lenny Kravitz for American Woman (The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack), Metal Performance won by Black Sabbath for Iron Man (Reunion), Best Rock Song won by Red Hot Chili Peppers for Scar Tissue (Californication), Alternative Music Performance won by Beck (Mutations), Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Album won by Eminem (The Slim Shady LP), Rap Duo/Group Performance won by The Roots for You Got Me (Things Fall Apart), Traditional Blues Album won by B.B. King (Blues On The Bayou), and Contemporary Folk Album won by Tom Waits (Mule Variations). | Grammy winners | | discography | | sample | | top of page | |
