Ofra Haza dies in Israel at 41 24 February 2000 Israeli disco/worldbeat singer Ofra Haza died yesterday of massive organ failure following a two week stay in intensive care at Tel Avivs Hashomer hospital. She was 41. Hazas blend of traditional middle eastern folk with western disco in the mid 80s earned her an international following, especially strong in the UK club scene. She had worked on projects with Don Was, Thomas Dolby, Paula Abdul, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, the Sisters Of Mercy, and Steven Spielberg. After a several year hiatus, she released a self-titled comeback album in 1997 (not released in the US) and sang the theme to Spielbergs Prince Of Egypt in 1998. Haza is considered a national hero in Israel. Prime Minister Ehud Barak eulogized Ofra emerged from the Hatikvah slums to reach the peak of Israeli culture. She has left a mark on us all. | BBC story | | bio | | discography | | sample from Desert Wind | | CD | | top of page | |
