Embrace join artist boycott of Austria 23 February 2000 Anthemic Britrockers Embrace have joined the arts protest against the fascist turn in Austrias government following the electoral success of Jorg Haiders Freedom Party. They have canceled their Vienna performance. Front man Danny McNamara told nme.com We cancelled the show so that we could assess the situation. Were not saying well never play Austria again, but if the Freedom Party was still part of the government there wed only go at the invite of an opposition group or as part of a protest. Were sorry for the people who came to see us last time we played in Vienna and we apologize to the 73% of Austrians who didnt vote for the Freedom Party. Lou Reed cancelled his Vienna performance earlier this month, and Bush front man Gavin Rossdale recently sang a Jewish prayer during that bands Vienna performance in pointed protest against the Party. Embrace release their second album Drawn From Memory on 27 March in the UK on Hut records. | NME story | | Freedom Party article | | tour dates | | bio | | discography | | sample from The Good Will Out | | top of page | |
