John Lennon accused of funding the IRA
22 February 2000
David Shayler, former agent with the British government’s information and security agency MI5 and now exiled in Paris for breaking the Official Secrets Act, has told The Observer newspaper that he has seen an MI5 file on slain Beatle John Lennon claiming he funded the Irish Republican Army.
California history professor John Wiener, whose book on Lennon Gimme Some Truth explores the FBI’s interest in the artist, told the BBC “[The FBI] were certainly misinformed about his support for the [Workers’ Revolutionary Party] and that makes me worried whether they were wrong with the IRA.”
US judge Brian Robbins recently granted Wiener permission to see new files in the FBI’s possession relating to Lennon—possibly letters from the MI5 to the FBI—but the FBI is appealing to block the release. They have stated they are “honor-bound” to not betray the letter writers’ trust.
Now Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, 67, has issued a statement denying Lennon funded the IRA. “My husband did not give money to the IRA. He gave money when there were people who asked for it, people who needed it...
“He thought this money was to be used for children, ophans or women who needed it.” | BBC story | | Gimme Some Truth site | | MI5 | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
