John Lennons Imagine piano up for auction 18 February 2000 The famous white grand piano in the Imagine video turns out to have been a prop. John Lennon composed and recorded the 1971 song on his own natural walnut upright Steinway. That instrument, currently owned by an anonymous English collector, will be sold by online auction this July. Its now on display in Liverpool at The Beatles Story museum, and will remain there after the sale until Lennons 60th birthday in October. Auctioneer Ted Owen expects the piano to fetch £1 million (US$1.6 million). He is launching an entertainment memorabilia auction site with Fleetwood Mac founder Mick Fleetwood, called eOffer online. The site should go live next month, and the piano will be among the first items on the block. | BBC story | | discography | | sample | | top of page | |
