American Mavericks fest honors Zappa, Cage, Riley
17 February 2000
The San Francisco Symphony, the New World Symphony, and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas stage the American Mavericks festival at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall 7-24 June. The festival celebrates musical iconoclasts of the past century who have opened new vistas and pushed beyond all reasonable limits.
Thomas said “American music has been so much about grasping new ideas... whether it’s an aggressive use of dissonance to recreate the excitement of the clangorous building of skyscrapers, the frenzy of the mechanized world, a memory of folk music, or just the sound of the wind.”
Composers whose works will see performance at American Mavericks include John Adams, George Antheil, Milton Babbitt, John Cage, Henry Cowell, Duke Ellington, Morton Feldman, Charles Ives, Steve Reich (who also performs at the festival), Terry Riley, Edgard Varèse, and Frank Zappa. Tickets are available now. | CDnow allstar story | | Festival page at SFS | | Fesitval site (live 13 March) | | top of page |
