Lou Reed shuns Austrias fascist turn 14 February 2000 Former Velvet Underground front man, legendary singer/songwriter Lou Reed has called off a scheduled performance in Vienna in protest of the recent inclusion of the fascist Freedom Party in the Austrian government. Controversial demagogue Joerg Haider led his right wing party to victory. It was inaugurated earlier this month. Haider remains as governor in the southern province of Carinthia. On Austrian state radio, Reed said When people elect someone like him, it is their right to do so. But that doesnt mean that other people have to voluntarily choose to be near him. Ironically, one of the foremost human rights organizations on the planet, the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, is based in Vienna. Reed is now in Germany for the Hamburg premiere of his musical POEtry, about 19th century US author Edgar Allen Poe. | Associated Press story | | Freedom Party article | | Poe bio | | discography | | sample | | top of page | |
