Screamin’ Jay Hawkins dies following surgery
14 February 2000
Cleveland native Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (Jalacy J. Hawkins) died on Saturday in a hospital near Paris, from complications following gastrointestinal surgery, at age 70.
The ghoul fixated, wacko R&B legend, said to be a major influence for the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper, may be best known for his 1956 track I Put A Spell On You (covered in 1968 by Creedence Clearwater Revival on their debut). Accounts of his childhood vary, but many agree that he was abandoned by his mother as a baby and raised by Native Americans, joining the US Army at age 14. | Live Daily story | | discography | | sample from Live: Olympia, Paris 1999 | | top of page |
