Two Dollar Guitar fleshes out minimal sound for US tour 11 February 2000 SonicNet’s Chris Nelson talks with Sonic Youth drumer Steve Shelley and front man Tim Foljahn about their trio Two Dollar Guitar. They released their fourth album Weak Beats And Lame-Ass Rhymes last month. Minimalism is a watchword for the band. Shelley said “When you’re trying something, you ask yourself, Does this song really need this part to get across what it’s trying to convey?” Two Dollar Guitar’s heritage ranges well beyond Sonic Youth, including Spastic Rhythm Tarts, Jad Fair, Mosquito, and Cat Power. They’re touring the US now with friends Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline from Scarnella, guitarist Smokey Hormel (who has worked with Beck and Tom Waits), Janet Wygal on bass and keyboards, and Tim Prudhomme (guitarist from Fuck). TWG will play England’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival early April.
