Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus set for solo LP, tour
7 December 2000

One year ago this week UK label Domino confirmed that California alt rock icons Pavement had disbanded, confirming an on-stage announcement by front man Stephen Malkmus the month before in London that “We’re retiring for the forseeable future.” He had also, apparently, called it quits with his other band, David Berman’s alt-country Silver Jews. Pavement cited the need for more time with family as the main motivation for disbanding. Their last (and perhaps final) album was 1999’s critically acclaimed Terror Twilight, produced by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead).
Now Malkmus has announced that Pavement’s label Matador will release his first solo album, self titled and set for a 13 February store date in North America. The tracks are Black Book, Phantasies, Jo Jo’s Jacket, Church On White, The Hook, Discretion Grove, Troubbble, Pink India, Trojan Curfew, Vague Space, Jenny And The Ess-Dog, and Deado.
On 16 January he’ll release for North America the first single, Discretion Grove, with non-album B sides Sin Taxi and Leisurely Poison.
Malkmus is planning a US tour for March or April 2001, possibly to be extended to include Europe and Japan. More details as we get them. | Pavement (very out of date) | | bio | | discography | | top of page |
