MTV launches Japanese Web site, cable channel

Further helping define what it means to be 'indie,' at the stroke of the new year Music Television (MTV) extends its global reach with the launch of MTV Japan as a tightly integrated television cable channel and Web site (although an early version of the Web site is already up).
MTV Japan becomes the 29th localized channel for the network. All told, MTV is available on televisions in 331 million households in 140 countries. MTV is a unit of entertainment conglomerate Viacom which also owns VH1, Sonicnet, and Addicted To Noise, and which partners with France based Vivendi, owner of music label parent company Universal Music Group, in turn the owner of a wide array of labels including A&M, Arista, Def Jam, Island, Interscope, Motown, and Verve.
The 24 hour channel’s first video is a secret, but will be from a “popular Japanese artist.” MTV Japan will feature a broad mix of shows, some that sound every bit as quaint and lame as those on the US version. Home Base, for example, is “a one-hour daily show with a set decorated like the coolest apartment in town. Home Base will be where MTV’s popular hosts hang out as well as the place where artists perform or celebrities visit and give viewers special advice.” VJ Battle “will allow Japanese youth to test their hosting skills and compete for viewer votes to regularly host programming on the network.” | MTV Japan | | top of page |
