Roskilde issues joint statement with Oasis, Pet Shop Boys
19 December 2000

British pop bands Oasis and Pet Shop Boys, scheduled to play the night following the tragic Pearl Jam concert in Roskilde, Denmark this summer, cancelled their shows out of respect for the nine young men suffocated by crushing in the Orange Stage’s mosh pit. At the time, organizers for the annual charity festival voted to continue the event and then pointedly criticized the bands for breaking their contracts. They refused to pay either band their fees or for expenses incurred.
Now all three parties have reached an amicable settlement, announced yesterday in a brief press release:

The performance fees—after expenses to the two bands—will be donated to measures to improve safety at future festivals and to the following international charities:

   WAR CHILD
   SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE
   FREEMUSE (against censorship in music)
   THE HUNGER SITE
   HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH

Roskilde Festival respect the groups’ reasons for not performing after the tragedy and all parties hope that lessons learned from the festival will lead to improved safety for all future festival audiences throughout the world.

Best regards,

Oasis   Pet Shop Boys   Roskilde Festival

Despite recent wire reports to the contrary, Danish police are still investigating the tragedy and have not issued any statements of blame or exoneration for the nine deaths.
One month ago festival organizers released an extensive statement on security in which they outlined findings from the investigation so far, and plans for next year’s festival. | Roskilde festival | | Security statement | | top of page |
