RAINN asks for holiday contributions 18 December 2000
The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), founded in 1994 and based in Washington DC, provides a toll free confidential counseling hotline for all residents of the US. Available 24 hours a day, the number is 1-800-656-HOPE. RAINN president Scott Berkowitz has just issued a request for contributions to help keep the organization’s phone lines staffed through the holidays: “The holidays are often a difficult time for survivors of rape and sexual assault, and the increased number of calls to the RAINN hotline place added demands on our limited budget. “RAINN has already helped more than 75,000 victims of sexual assault this year... Your contribution to RAINN will help ensure that the hotline will continue to be available to those who need help.” You can make a US tax-deductible contribution online or by sending a check to RAINN, 635-B Pennsylvania Av SE, Washington DC 20003, USA. Numerous musical artists, notably Sarah McLachlan through her Lilith Fair tour, have helped RAINN over the years. Organizers for last year’s Woodstock festival, during which multiple rapes were committed, donated 1% of the proceeds from the Woodstock 1999 double CD and video to RAINN (too little too late, of course, as, Galen Sherwin, president for New York city’s chapter of the National Organization for Women commented at the time: “What it amounts to is profiting from an event that was really very damaging to a lot of women.”). | RAINN | | donate to RAINN | | top of page | |
