Ladyfest Scotland set for August 2001; new UNIFEM report

The second annual Ladyfest celebration of women’s music, art, and politics is now set for 12-14 August 2001 at the Arches Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland. The female organized event will showcase work exclusively by females, although anyone is welcome to attend.
The lineup is starting to come together, with the latest information available on the festival Web site. Artists so far include Bangs, Nicole Blackman, and Penny Arcade. If you are interested in performing or exhibiting your work, contact the organizers now.
The Ladyfest series is motivated in part by the resurgence of violent misogyny among young men in modern democracies, brought to worldwide attention last year by the rapes at the Woodstock festival in New York state.
Gender-based violence, a chronic worldwide problem, is the subject of a new, free publication from the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). Last Thursday they released With An End In Sight—Strategies From The UNIFEM Trust Fund to Eliminate Violence Against Women, a report that details programs aimed at ending gender-based violence in Bosnia Herzogovina, Cambodia, Honduras, India, Kenya, Nigeria, and the West Bank and Gaza. You can download the report for free from the UNIFEM Web site.
UNIFEM executive director Noeleen Heyzer said “Eradicating violence against women requires coordinated action and commitment by many actors; including governments, civil society, the judiciary, police, media, health-care workers, educators and the international community. UNIFEM is committed to supporting this critical work. Today we celebrate the women around the world whose conviction and courage to organize and lobby for change remains an endless source of inspiration and a guide for our work.”
The first Ladyfest held this past August in Olympia, Washington, raised US$30,000 for local women’s charities. Proceeds from the 2001 event will benefit the Glasgow Women’s Library and SAY Women, a medium-term residential counseling and assistance center in Glasgow that provides “safe accommodation for young women aged 16-25 years who are survivors of sexual abuse, rape or sexual assault.” You can reach SAY Women in Scotland at 0141 778 4777. | Ladyfest Scotland 2001 | | Ladyfest Olympia 2000 | | UNIFEM | | With An End In Sight (PDF) | | top of page |
