MTV asks Dead Prez to censor video
31 August 2000

Talahassee, Florida based political rappers dead prez (M1 and stic.man), who played yesterday at the Black August benefit concert in New York city, are in dispute with music video outlets including MTV regarding their new clip They Schools taken from their first album Let’s Get Free. MTV won’t air it, according to Loud Records, unless certain scenes are changed or cut. As of press time MTV could not be reached for comment.
Loud Records says they were asked to remove scenes in which M1 and stic.man appear with a noose around their necks while among Brooklyn, NY high school students. M1 explains: “In the video, the wearing of the noose, the rebellious students, and the presence of the police and military in our educational process represent a hostile environment that our children are miseducated in... 'They Schools' is a tool for change. To change the video would be an injustice.”
Dead prez enter the studio next month to record their second (not yet titled) album, the follow-up to February’s Let’s Get Free. In October they join the Okayplayer US tour along with The Roots, Common, Mos Def, and several other hip-hop and rap groups. | dead prez on Loud/Sony | | Okayplayer | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
