Kim Gordon releases SYR5 on CD, double vinyl LP
23 August 2000

On 29 August Kim Gordon of NY noiserock quartet Sonic Youth releases the fifth album in the SYR (Sonic Youth Records) experimental series, titled following the label’s spare style as SYR5. The set is performed mostly by a trio consisting of Gordon on guitar and vocals, drummer/samples player Ikue Nori (of the legendary DNA), and DJ Olive (of illbient underground band We). Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto plays on one track.
SYR5 was produced with Chicago sound guru Jim O’Rourke (who’s been touring as a member of Sonic Youth this year) and recorded by Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, White Zombie, Swans, and the William Shatner Priceline ads). The album is notable for Gordon’s return to electric guitar, on which she started in Sonic Youth before migrating to bass, and for her improvisational vocal style. | Sonic Youth | | Ikue Mori discography | | O'Rourke discography | | Wharton Tiers | | discography | | CD | | top of page |
