Stand And Be Counted: the place of charity in music
22 August 2000

In March David Crosby (of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young; and more recently of CPR) released a book co-written with David Bender titled Stand And Be Counted: Making Music, Making History—The Dramatic Story Of The Artists And Causes That Changed America. Using interviews and historical records the book examines the worldwide tradition of musicians employing their fame and talent to motivate others to support and participate in social change.
Now US cable channel TLC is airing a four hour, two part documentary based on the book. The show includes interviews and concert footage of a wide spectrum of musician-activists ranging from George Harrison (Concert for Bangladesh) and Adam Yauch (Tibetan Freedom Concert) to Peter Gabriel (Witness) and Jewel (The Clearwater Project).
Episode One, Concerts And Causes, aired Monday night. You can catch episode two, Songs Of Freedom, tonight (22 August) starting 9 pm in most North American markets. TLC has described the special as a premiere, suggesting they’ll re-show it. They haven’t offered any hint of when that might be, but sometime in September is likely.
Harper San Francisco expects to release a paperback edition of Stand And Be Counted in February, 2001. | Stand And Be Counted (book) | | Documentary description on TLC | | top of page |
