John Lydon on American politics
18 August 2000

The BBC’s Kevin Anderson chatted with John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) about US politics in Los Angeles this week at the Democratic Convention. Lydon, who wrote the punk (although he rejects that label) anthem Anarchy In The UK finds the convention process “Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. One big balloon fest. It’s all about balloons. Who has the most balloons wins. At the moment, the Republicans have got more than enough...
“[The American political process] needs to be much more open-minded and stop this little ghetto-isations of 'I’m Republican. I’m Democrat. I’m this. I’m that.' You should first and foremost see yourself as a human being and an individual, and go along with whatever suits your points of view.”
Lydon has been covering the conventions, Republican and Democratic, as a commentator for Web site eYada, where he hosts a weekly radio show on Saturdays starting 4 pm New York time (9 pm London time). His VH1 series Rotten Television is still not canceled, according to its Web site, although just two episodes have appeared and none since May. | BBC story | | Rotten Radio on eYada | | Rotten Television on VH1 | | Democratic Party | | Republican Party | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
