Steve Strange given mercy after stealing Teletubby
6 April 2000

In a story as sad as it is droll and ironic, Steve Strange (Steve Harrington), singer for ’80s English synth pop band Visage, has had a three month jail sentence suspended after admitting guilt in the theft of a Teletubbies doll—while on bail for stealing a ladies’ jacket and with previous convictions for stealing cosmetics.
Strange’s solicitor Mel Butler said “He has found it difficult to cope with falling from grace after being a man of considerable wealth in the Eighties.” Successfully arguing for a suspended sentence, Butler said “There is a substantial risk of self-harm if he is sent to prison.”
The 40 year old Strange is now unemployed, having worked for a time in his native south Wales as a band manager. | BBC story | | bio | | discography | | sample from Visage | | top of page |
