Gruff Rhys discusses Welshness and SFA’s new LP
30 April 2000

Gruff Rhys, singer for Welsh psychedelic quintet Super Furry Animals, spoke recently with the BBC’s Joe Goodden about their forthcoming all Welsh language LP Mwng (“mane”). It is their fifth studio album, released today (1 May) in the UK on the band’s own Placid Casual label. The US version due 6 June includes a bonus disc of B sides and exlusive non album tracks.
“There’s nothing specifically Welsh about the music... I lead a bilingual life anyway. I think Mwng is quite Anglo-American sounding... It wasn’t a conscious political decision to do the album in Welsh. We just did it because that’s what we felt like doing... When we were growing up we had no interest in playing the harp. We wanted to get away from that whole Celtic thing.” | BBC story | | Super Furry Animals | | discography | | sample from Guerilla | | top of page |
