In search of... Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ 57 kids
28 April 2000

Biographer Maral Nigolian has set up a Web site to track down the 57 children that blues/R&B mad man Screamin' Jay Hawkins (Jalacy J. Hawkins) claimed—just before his death two months ago—to have fathered over the years. The music legend was married six times and had numerous affairs and liaisons. He died at age 70 at a hospital near Paris on 12 February, following emergency surgery.
Nigolian plans to DNA test all likely candidates, and then throw a party for his assembled progeny this summer.
The ghoul fixated Hawkins is said to have been a major influence for the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper, and may be best known for his 1956 track I Put A Spell On You (covered in 1968 by Creedence Clearwater Revival on their debut). Accounts of his childhood vary, but many agree that he was abandoned by his mother as a baby and raised by Native Americans, joining the US Army at age 14. | BBC story | | Jays Kids | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
