Columbine exploitation video used songs illegally
27 April 2000

Sarah McLachlan—Canadian pop singer/songwriter, sometime target of the religious right, and recipient just yesterday of the Order Of Canada for her work for women’s causes—has demanded that the Littleton, Colorado fire department remove her song I Will Remember You from the Columbine shooting documentary now on sale to the public. The fire department started selling the video yesterday at US$25 (£16) a copy. It contains scenes of pooled blood and shattered skull remains, set to a pop music soundtrack.
McLachlan’s US label wrote “The Columbine High School shootings that occurred over one year ago were a catastrophic tragedy. Our compassion goes out to the family and friends of the victims of this unfortunate event. Neither Sarah McLachlan nor Arista Records were ever approached for the usage of her music or image within the video being released. In fact, we are demanding that her song 'I Will Remember You' be removed from this exploitative videotape.”
Folk singer Cheryl Wheeler has also demanded that the fire department remove a song of hers from the tape. | Billboard story | | Sarah McLachlan | | bio | | discography | | sample from Surfacing | | top of page |
