On Monday union janitors in Los Angeles approved a three year contract that, while falling significantly short of their goals, provides raises each year and a bonus on return to work. Mike Garcia, president of the Service Employees International Union Local 1877, said “In three years we will have lifted our members above the federal poverty line.”
On 12 April in LA Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello had presented the union with US$5,000 (£3,100) for their strike fund on behalf of his band, and gave a brief speech. An anonymous donor had earlier contributed US$1 million (£625,000) to the fund. Union volunteers and church kitchens provided more than 4,000 meals a day to protesters during the 21 day strike.
Following the contract ratification this week Morello issued a statement which reads in part “Rage Against the Machine would like to congratulate the Janitors Union of Los Angeles on their victory in their struggle for better wages and dignity in the workplace. This win over management is a perfect example of what can happen when workers, students, and the community show solidarity in fighting for social justice.” | CDnow allstar story | | Rage Against The Machine | | discography | | sample | | CD | | top of page |
