Dr. Dre sues Napster for copyright infringement
25 April 2000

Working with the same legal team used by Metallica in their current lawsuit against San Mateo, California software startup Napster, rap artist/producer/label chief Dr. Dre (Andre Young) has now filed his own copyright infringement lawsuit. Dre told the press “I don’t like people stealing my music.” Dre had contacted Napster last week and asked them to assure him that none of his songs were being traded through their system, implying he was ready to pursue legal action.
The lawsuit, co-filed by Dre and his label Aftermath Entertainment, says in part “Napster has built a business based on large-scale piracy... Napster’s users are able to obtain the music they want for free. The copyright owners, those rightfully entitled to profit from their music, get nothing.”
The Napster software, available only for Windows, allows Internet users to easily trade MP3 (MPEG I, layer 3 format) music files. The company this week announced they are paying all expenses for an upcoming Limp Bizkit/Cypress Hill tour of the US, which will be free to concertgoers (see earlier story on Rockbites). | CDnow allstar story | | Napster | | Dr. Dre unofficial site | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
