Boy George to appear on BBC with anti-gay leader
22 April 2000

English pop star and gay rights activist Boy George (George O’Dowd), who narrowly escaped death in December when a 62 pound mirrored ball fell from supports during a stage rehearsal, will appear head to head on British television next month with a key backer of an anti-gay provision known as Section 28. Scottish businessman Brian Souter has largely paid for a campaign to keep the British law in place, against a tide of more tolerant sentiment. The Scotish Executive plans to kill the measure, which prohibits mention of homosexuality in schools. Critics say Section 28 contributes to homophobic violence. Many artists, including Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch, have spoken out against it.
George and Souter appear on BBC One’s Question Time program on 11 May. Producers claim the pro-gay/anti-gay juxtaposition was entirely coincidental. | BBC story | | Boy Pride (unofficial site) | | discography | | sample from Unrecoupable One Man Bandit | | top of page |
