Chrissie Hynde scores victory over The Gap
20 April 2000

The Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) campaign to stop the sale of Indian leather, brought to media attention in large part by Pretenders front woman Chrissie Hynde, has scored a victory. Officials of retail clothing chain The Gap have stated that they will no longer sell items containing the leather. The decision also affects Gap subsidiaries Old Navy and Banana Republic.
Peta holds that leather originating in India involves extreme mistreatment of the animals, including multi-hundred mile death marches to one of the few Indian states allowing cow slaughter.
Hynde told reporters “I’m hoping the Gap’s next ad will be 'Everybody out of leather,' but this is a great step.” | BBC story | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
