Low Power FM gets slammed by US House 18 April 2000 In January the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted in favor of the Low Power FM initiative, opening US airways to hundreds of small new FM stations. Now, just two weeks after the Commission began licensing under the historical decision, the US House of Representatives has voted almost three-to-one to support a bill that would effectively kill it. FCC officials told the press that the bill is the first instance in the Commissions 65 year history that a Congressional chamber has usurped its authority over the radio spectrum. The main forces behind the new effort to kill low power FM are National Public Radio and the National Association of Broadcasters. Supporters of the initiative see it as a long overdue antidote to the merger mania that many see as destroying local relevance and artistic value on the American FM band. The low power FM initiative is backed by the FCC, US president Bill Clinton, schools, churches, religious organizations, and a range of celebrities including Ian MacKaye of Fugazi, Ellis Marsalis, Jackson Browne, and Bonnie Raitt. The bill to kill lower power FM now moves to the Senate. | Low Power Radio coalition | | FCC LPFM page | | top of page | |
