Rammstein CD hits #1 on first day of sale in Germany
3 April 2001

Unabashedly over-the-top German industrial band Rammstein released their first studio album in three years this week, titled Mutter (English: Mother) and featuring a close-up image of the face of a fetus on the album sleeve. The disc immediately went to number one on the Amazon.de (Germany) sales ranking, and sits comfortably within the top 100 on Amazon.com in the US.
The band, whose name and first single darkly and sardonically commemorate a horrible 1988 airshow disaster at the American Ramstein air force base, gained worldwide notoriety in 1999 when investigators revealed that they were among the artists (with KMFDM and Marilyn Manson, among others) favored by two Littleton, Colorado high schoolers who plotted and carried out a spree slaying on their classmates.
Immediately following the Columbine massacre, they wrote “[Our songs] have no lyrical content or political beliefs that could have possibly influenced such behavior... Members of Rammstein have children of their own, in whom they continually strive to instill healthy and nonviolent values.” Bolstering credibility for a kindler, gentler Rammstein was their selection in 1999 to open for the aggressively antiracist Skunk Anansie on a major US tour.
The new album contains such genteel charmers as the Ministry-esque Rein Raus (English: In Out), which, delivered in Til Lindemann’s trademark comic-book growl, is dripping in irony of a sort likely to be invisible to a good many of their school age fans

      The ride was short
      I am sorry
      I climb off
      I have no time
I must go now to the other horses
They also want to be ridden
      In, Out

Next month Rammstein start a tour of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and England. They’ll very likely tour North America this summer. | Rammstein | | fan site | | tour dates | | bio | | discography | | CD | | top of page |
